The Foundation: In May 1987, at the age of 16, I embarked on my professional journey with an apprenticeship at GKN Kwikform, a leading scaffolding company in the country. The initial 12 weeks were spent in the yard, acquainting myself with various scaffolding components. This groundwork prepared me to confidently step into the scaffolding industry.

Early Career Progression: My first assignment was at a petrochemical site, where I spent four years gaining diverse experiences in multiple scaffolding disciplines. By the age of 20, I had earned my advanced scaffolder’s card, marking my transition into a fully qualified scaffolder. By 27, I advanced to a scaffolding foreman, managing a team of 22, and began liaising with clients and delving into the logistics of scaffolding.

Towards Entrepreneurship: At 30, I joined Cheshire Scaffolds, supervising the entire team and gaining my initial experience in estimating. By 32, equipped with rich industry knowledge and experience, I was ready to venture into entrepreneurship.

The Birth of Premier Scaffolding Solutions (PSS): In August 2003, Premier Scaffolding Solutions (PSS) was established. I invested my last paycheck, which included a quarterly bonus, in a 6-year-old pickup truck and second-hand scaffolding components from a recently closed company. A shipping container at the back of Meadow Mill in Stockport, previously used by my brother’s sheet metalwork business, became our first office and storage space.

Initial Growth and Marketing: I bought 100 stamps and envelopes, crafted a compelling introduction letter, and reached out to local construction businesses. This proactive approach quickly paid off, securing our first two clients, LJ Roofing and Coulson Construction, within just three days. Remarkably, our relationship with Coulson Construction has endured to this day.

Expansion and Development: In the first year, the team grew to four, and we moved from Meadow Mill to our first dedicated scaffolding yard in Chadkirk Business Park. Two years later, we took a significant step forward by relocating to Trafford Park, Manchester. This strategic move placed us in the heart of a bustling industrial area, ideal for our expanding operations. Our premises in Trafford Park started with a substantial space but have since doubled in size, incorporating the land and buildings of surrounding units.

Two Decades of Success: Fast forward 20 years, and we have transformed significantly. Our team now includes over 20 direct employees, supported by top-notch external health and safety consultants and design consultants. Our fleet has expanded to include multiple wagons, ranging from 3.5t to 23t, and crew vans for our scaffolders. In 2017, we rebranded to Premier Scaffolding Limited (PSL), a name that reflects our growth and prominence in the industry.

Our presence in Trafford Park, Manchester, has not only enabled us to better serve our clients but has also positioned us strategically for further expansion and diversification. The enlarged premises have allowed us to streamline our operations, store more equipment, and manage larger projects efficiently. This physical expansion mirrors our business growth and our commitment to delivering exceptional scaffolding solutions.
